To begin the process of setting up your life to be the person you’ve always wanted to be, you have to first give yourself permission. It sounds unnecessary, but you have to allow yourself to accept what you really want. Giving yourself permission should excite and scare you at the same time. It’s the first step in fighting for your right to write. That inner voice that tells you that you’re just being silly, that you’ll never make a living from it, that you’re not good enough, that you’re just wasting time. It’s the first hurdle. And for most of us, the biggest.
Confirm your committment to yourself. Join the Academy of American Poets (poets.org), Americans For the Arts (artsusa.org), the Florida Writers Association (floridawriters.net), your local artist or writers guild, or any one of the hundreds of organizations around the world. Do some research, and choose the one that best represents your interests. There are so many online communities for people just like us that offer resources, support, and conversation.
